Networking Meeting
In March, the first member networking meeting was held. National City Bank sponsored the event. Representatives from the bank provided various options available to business clients for assistance in their day-to-day operations. The following summarizes the material presented:
Wendy Bernth, PNC Merchant Services, spoke about the benefits of having a Gift Card Program for your business. Having a gift card program can increase your receivables as customers generally spend at least 30% more than the value of the card. Gift cards can also be used to reward frequent customers or acknowledge a customer’s special occasion or birthday. A monthly business card drawing and reward with a gift card or team up with an area business and solicit your business with a gift card. These are ideas to market your business and grow revenue.
Debit card processing was also discussed. It is beneficial for a business to have a pin pad attached to their credit card processing equipment if their normal transaction amount is greater than $34.00. When debit cards are processed with a pin number the transaction cost is generally no higher than .90 per transaction most much lower. By investing in a pin pad device, this can greatly reduce your processing costs especially if your average transaction amount is much higher.
PNC Merchant Services has a two promotions targeting credit card processing. The $500 Meet or Beat offer is available to review your monthly merchant statement and discuss credit card processing. If we are unable to beat your overall processing costs, then you would receive a $500 Visa Gift Card. Another promotion that is available is a $250 credit if you open up a National City business checking account along with a PNC Merchant Services account within 30 days of each other. You will receive the $250 credit into your checking account.
By coupling the PNC Merchant Services account with a National City business checking account, come June when the National City branches switches to PNC Bank, you would receive next day credit for your daily batch deposit. This will speed up your cash flow.

Baumgartners have been in printing business in Milford for over 70 yearsThe late Arch Baumgartner bought The Milford Mail Aug. 5, 1939, and the Baumgartner family has been in the printing business for over 70 years. “It’s hard to believe my family has been involved in the community newspaper business for 70 years,” said current The Mail-Journal publisher Ron Baumgartner. Ron is the son of Arch and his wife, Della. “My father took the step only youth would consider, stepping into a business he knew very little about. But when you are that age, little seems impossible. |
| “When my father entered World War II, his sister, Edith, was left to hold the reigns until war’s end. That today also seems an impossible task. But she did it.
“Later my mother, Della, joined and managed the business end until her retirement several years ago. They made a team that carried the business through the ’50s and ’60s with — by today’s standards — slow, antiquated equipment. “I joined the company in 1966 and my wife, Gloria, a couple years later,” Ron further explained. “Gloria’s responsibilities ranged from child rearing through payroll, human resources and eventually business manager.” Today the newspaper is a result of a combination of The Milford Mail (established 1888) with the Syracuse-Wawasee Journal (established 1907) in 1962. The latter newspaper was purchased by Arch and Della in 1961. “The four of us, along with an ever-growing team of dedicated co-workers, continued to push the business forward. Advanced technology and the growth of computers became a real vanguard in our printing and publication growth from the ’70s through today,” explained Ron. The Mail-Journal now has 27 sister publications under parent company The Papers Inc. These include ‘the PAPER,’ Senior Life, Auto and RV, House and Home, Pets and Livestock, Trader Wheels and Deals and the latest additions: The Shopping Guide News of Fulton County, glo, a publication for women 20-40 plus, named in honor of Gloria Baumgartner and Indiana Gardener, featuring articles on gardening, landscaping and the like. |
