Lodging With Pets? Four Things To Ask Hotels You're Considering

Posted on: 27 May 2021

People frequently travel with pets. As such, many hotels have changed their policies to include pets as welcome guests. However, this doesn't mean that every hotel will allow pets in the first place, nor does it mean there aren't any restrictions if pets are allowed. Therefore, if you're traveling with pets, here are four things you need to ask the hotels you're considering booking with.

Their pet deposit

Most hotels feature a pet deposit for those traveling with pets. Ask what this deposit is and how much of it you get back when you check out. If your pet deposit were to be relinquished, ask what would cause the deposit to be kept by the hotel.

Some hotels don't feature pet deposits at all but have pet fees instead. Pet fees are not refundable and may be charged on a per-pet basis. Make sure you know what all the costs are that might be associated with lodging with pets so you're ready when you check in.

Their pet areas

Hotels may allow pets, but they might not have pet areas for them to do their business in or to get exercise. Before traveling with pets to a hotel, ask establishments you're considering where pets can go for exercise. If hotels don't offer pet areas for their guests, ask if they recommend local nearby pet parks or open fields.

Their pet allowance

Are certain pets allowed in a hotel but not others? Some hotels may only allow small pets or only certain breeds or species of pets. Some hotels allow pets in some rooms but not others. If you are booking a hotel that allows pets, make sure it allows your pets so there is no confusion or disappointment later when you do check in.

Their pet rules

Hotels often require pets to be on leashes or inside kennels when they are on the hotel property. Hotels may also require pets to be attended to at all times and not left alone in hotel rooms. Unfortunately, some hotels don't allow pets in the lobby. Make sure you know what pet rules are enforced before checking in. This way, you can keep your pets properly tended to while you check in and while you enjoy your stay.

It's wise to call any hotel you're staying in directly to make your arrangements so you know what their pet policies are. This way, you don't have to rely on knowledge you find online or at a booking agency to be accurate or current.
