Since there are so many hotels scattered across the country, you have many options when choosing one. One small choice can significantly affect your experience, and specific circumstances require different decisions. Some choices will come down to your personal preferences and what's available in the area you're visiting.
Here are some of the common choices you'll have when searching for a hotel and how they might affect your experience.
Chain or Not?
Choosing between a privately-owned hotel and a chain is something that many people have differing views on, which can make it hard to choose a place when you travel with others. Some think that chain hotels are more predictable in their quality, amenities, etc., while others prefer privately-owned hotels because they believe the service is more personable. You can find good and bad examples of chain hotels and privately-owned ones, so you should check them out before booking a room whenever possible—whether it's a chain or not.
Large or Small?
Some people prefer staying in small hotels, while others prefer large ones. It's easier to blend in a large hotel, and they're more likely to have better amenities. However, smaller hotels are easier to get around, and you'll probably have more personal interactions with the staff, as they'll have more time to focus on your needs since there are fewer guests.
Low Price or Expensive?

A more obvious choice you'll have to make when booking a hotel is whether or not to stay at one that's pet friendly. If you have a pet making the trip with you, you'll need to find a hotel that will allow them to stay in your room with you.
